Abstract: Damage caused by landslides is a major issue in Sri Lanka especially in areas such as Ratnapura and NuwaraEliya districts. Due to weather changes landslides become more frequent and cause damage to resources and people. Massive loss of property, deaths and injuries are the results of landslides. Potentially, much of this damage to property and many of the injuries and deaths could be avoided with early warning systems for landslides. Currently, there is no proper system to send early warnings, manage risk and minimize the impact of landslides. The proposed system is capable of predicting a possible landslide in a given area and issuing warnings that would assist in risk management. This research project has developed a low-cost, sustainable early warning system to send warning alerts via SMS to mitigate the landslide problem. As geological factors that help to detect a landslide, distance and ground water level during a specific time period are considered to be measured through devices for values. Critical limitations of the factors for landslide to occur are stored in the system. When calculated values exceed pre-determined values, the probability for a landslide to happen is high. Then the system will generate a warning message with SMS and send it automatically to the relevant people.
